For four summers in Gujarat, I volunteered at community medical camps providing free healthcare to families with limited access to medical services. I supported patient registration, guided people through screenings, organized supplies, and assisted the medical team during long, busy days. These camps served people from many different backgrounds, and being part of them taught me patience, cultural awareness, and compassionate communication.
One of the physicians I worked closely with once told me he was genuinely impressed by my dedication and the way I connected with patients. He even offered to write me a reference letter for a job I was preparing to apply for at the time : a moment that showed me how far empathy, hard work, and cross-cultural communication can go.
This experience shaped my understanding of global competency. It taught me that meaningful connection goes beyond language or culture it begins with openness, respect, and the willingness to understand someone elseโs world. Even now, living and learning in Canada, the values I built during those summers guide how I work, volunteer, and show up for my community in Kamloops.
