Category D: Employment Related to Global Competency
Pharmacy Assistant โ Rexall Drugstore, Kamloops (2024โPresent)
Working at Rexall has been one of the most important parts of my growth in Canada. As a Pharmacy Assistant, I support patients from all kinds of cultural, linguistic, and medical backgrounds. Whether Iโm preparing prescriptions, clarifying dosage instructions, or helping someone find something over the counter every interaction teaches me how to communicate with clarity, empathy, and cultural awareness.
One of the moments Iโll never forget was when an older gentleman told me I was โa god-sent angelโ โ simply because I helped him find the right size of bandages. It was such a small task, yet it showed me how deeply people appreciate patience, kindness, and the feeling of being understood. Experiences like this remind me that global competency isnโt always about big actions; sometimes itโs about meeting someoneโs needs in a way that respects their background, comfort level, and emotions.
In this role, Iโve learned how to adjust my communication for different customers, explain health information in simple language, and create a welcoming space where people feel safe asking questions. These everyday interactions have strengthened my ability to connect across cultures, understand different perspectives, and respond with compassion โ all skills that are central to global competency.
My work at Rexall continues to shape the kind of healthcare professional I hope to become: someone who combines accuracy and responsibility with genuine care, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to support every patient with dignity.
